Transitions Optical Enhances Team to Provide More Direct Support for Ontario Region

Transitions Optical has announced the expansion of its Canadian team by welcoming Jaime Lovegrove and Ronan O’Driscoll as new eyecare professional sales and training representatives for the Ontario region.

Lovegrove and O’Driscoll will be responsible for enhancing and growing relationships with Transitions Optical’s eyecare professional partners, with Lovegrove supporting Western Ontario and O’Driscoll supporting Eastern Ontario. Lovegrove and O’Driscoll will also work to strengthen and leverage relationships with other trade partners, including lens manufacturer sales representatives, buying group members and ECP associations. Both will support partners by providing training and education on the Transitions® family of products and helping to implement new marketing programs, sales strategies and promotions.

Lovegrove joins Transitions Optical from Rodenstock, where she was previously a territory sales representative for nearly two years. Prior to her time with Rodenstock, She served as an optician manager at IRIS The Visual Group, where she oversaw the daily operations of stores and clinics, trained new associates and managers and provided support during company mergers with new locations. Lovegrove graduated from the Georgian College Opticianry program with honors in 2007.

O’Driscoll joins Transitions Optical after serving at Canada Vision Works for four years as a territory sales representative. At Canada Vision Works, O’Driscoll acquired more than 30 new clients within his first twelve months of employment. For the past two years, he also served as a territory account representative for Kaenon Polarized. O’Driscoll graduated from the Cork Institute of Technology in Cork, Ireland, in 1999 with a diploma in Hospitality and Tourism.

VEL Presents its New Novel and Novella Lenses

Vision-Ease Lens (VEL) has recently launched Novel and Novella conventional front side progressives, whose advanced technology makes them as good or better than many backside digital progressives across 80 per cent of the Rx range. The vast majority of customers rely on conventional PAL technology and these new PAL offerings provide them with the most advanced technology on the market.

“The Novel and Novella lenses’ iterative design process was driven by feedback from extensive wearer trials,” said Scott Schaller, VEL worldwide vice president of sales and marketing. “These trials went beyond lens maps and calculations; they took into account real-life wearer comfort in a wide variety of visual tasks and incorporated feedback for maximum performance and patient comfort. The Novel general purpose lens has a 13-mm corridor and a 16.5-mm minimum fitting height, making it ideal for the broadest range of wearers and frame styles. Immediate polycarbonate availability includes clear, LifeRx photochromic and Coppertone polarized treatments. The company plans to release the new Novel design in plastic, including clear and photochromic, later this year.

Valeant to Acquire Bausch + Lomb for $8.7 Billion

The Montreal-area company Valeant Pharmaceuticals International and Bausch + Lomb Holdings Incorporated, the global eye health company, announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Valeant will acquire Bausch + Lomb for $8.7 billion in cash.

Under terms of the agreement, which was unanimously approved by the board of directors of both companies, Valeant will pay aggregate consideration of $8.7 billion in cash, of which approximately $4.5 billion will go to an investor group led by Warburg Pincus and approximately $4.2 billion will be used to repay Bausch + Lomb’s outstanding debt. Valeant expects to achieve at least $800 million in annual cost savings by end of 2014. Bausch + Lomb’s expects to have revenues of approximately $3.3 billion and adjusted EBITDA in 2013 of approximately $720 million. The transaction is expected to be immediately accretive to Valeant’s cash earnings per share.

The transaction will be financed with debt and approximately $1.5 – $2.0 billion of new equity. Valeant has secured fully committed debt financing for the transaction from Goldman Sachs Bank USA.

Bausch + Lomb will retain its name and become a division of Valeant. Valeant’s existing ophthalmology businesses will be integrated into the Bausch + Lomb division, creating a global eye health platform with estimated pro forma 2013 net revenue of more than $3.5 billion.

Essilor Perseverance Award

Sandra Al Ayoubi, an opticianry student in her third semester at Collège Édouard-Montpetit, recently earned the Essilor Perseverance award. Al Ayoubi was presented the $1,000 prize at a ceremony organized by the Fonds de développement du Collège Édouard-Montpetit onMay 9 2013.

To qualify for the Essilor Perseverance award, opticianry students must, among other things, maintain a predetermined average in their training courses, obtain a written affirmation from a coordinator attesting to their diligence (no absences from training courses) and write a 250-word essay highlighting their commitment and perseverance. The final selection is made by a committee that carefully examines all submissions.

Licensing Agreement Between Essilor and Sàfilo


Essilor and Sàfilo have announced a ten-year licensing agreement for the design, manufacture and worldwide distribution by Essilor of polarized ophthalmic lenses under the Polaroid brand for use with eyewear products in general.

Polarized sunwear is recognized for bringing superior vision comfort, reducing glare and increasing contrast while maintaining true color perception and clarity. Although consumer satisfaction with polarized lenses is very high, this market only represents 20 per cent of the total sunwear market in the world today.

Essilor is convinced that there is an important need to raise awareness amongst ECPs and consumers about the need to protect their eyes from the sun and UV hazards. This includes promotion of all available solutions, including sun prescription and polarized lenses.
