Mehran Baghaie, owner and
designer at Spectacle Eyeworks,
has made his mark with what
he refers to as “new age vintage
characterized by angular
forms to make them distinctly
different.” The company uses
acetate for frames and CR39
– Columbia Resin #39 – for
lenses. They’re manufactured
from a resin that mimics
the clarity of glass but is
lighter and less likely to
shatter. [ mod. Gisele C11 ]
Spectacle Eyeworks’ sunglass trends for summer 2023 are vintage and
chunky. Does this reflect the current trends in the broader fashion industry? “I hope so but I
don’t think so. I don’t follow trends!” he exclaims with characteristic cheekiness. His instinct tells him that his
Gisèle design will be this season’s front runner but, he admits, “I’m not sure who will be wearing it!” As an
independent brand, Spectacle Eyeworks hasn’t been impacted by industry trends like online shopping.
Despite Baghaie’s iconoclastic spirit, he is justifiably proud of his collections being nominated for awards at
shows including the International Optical Fair Tokyo (IOFT) and SILMO.

“ This season’s
collection will be all
about colour! “
[ Nat & Coco NC4578 Blue Demi and NC4575 Black ]
At Optika Eyewear, the Nat & Coco Sunglass Collection is making
a splash with a dash of purple, the dominant shade this summer,
according to Richard Allan, vice president of sales.
“This season’s collection will be all about colour! People are looking
for colours that make a statement and express who they are. Model
NC4591 Aqua truly makes an impact. This model features an over-sized
square shape, with front two-tone laminated acetate in shades of Aqua
and Bronze,” states Allan. “Our sunglass models are crafted from either
hand-made acetate or stainless steel and have broad appeal to adults of
all ages. For us, the most important factors are quality and price value.”
Nat & Coco will be launching 10 new men’s and women’s models for
Spring 2023.
