INNOVA MEDICAL OPHTHALMICS
INNOVA Medical Ophthalmics has introduced the Eye-Light®, a unique dry eye treatment
device that combines Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and low-level light therapy (LLLT).
Eye-Light’s two treatment devices have different mechanisms of action, each an effective dry
eye treatment by itself. Together, the treatment effect is incremental.
“Dry eye is difficult to treat as there are several contributing factors, which affect patients
differently,” says Wayne Stobie, vice president, Sales. “A treatment that allows different levels
of therapy can be used effectively on a large patient base. The Eye-Light is perfect for any
patient with dry eye. In mild cases, a single therapy can be selected; in more advanced cases,
the IPL and LLLT therapies can be combined for optimal efficacy.”
Eye-Light simultaneously treats the lower and upper eyelids with direct and indirect
applications and doesn’t require gel during the treatment process. A patient can receive both
treatments in 20 minutes.
The Eye-light treatment consists of five painless IPL light flashes around the eye, inducing
increased blood flow by contracting the blood vessels, and improving secretion of
anti-inflammatory cytokines. This is followed by 15 minutes with the LLLT treatment.
Eye-Light’s standard LLLT therapy uses red light, which has been shown to effectively
treat hordeolum and chalazion in addition to dry eye. A blue light LLLT is available that,
combined with red light LLLT, has been shown to effectively treat demodex and
staphylococcal blepharitis.
Compared to other dry eye treatments, the per-patient costs to ECPs are low, says Stobie.
“After the initial investment on the device, the consumable cost-per-combined-treatment
can be as low as $14.”
