Zeiss has introduced a new generation of

Zeiss PhotoFusion X lenses using a completely
new photochromic system with faster dyes in
a robust-yet-more-open carrier matrix. This
means Zeiss PhotoFusion X lenses darken
and clear up to 60 per cent faster than the
previous generation of Zeiss PhotoFusion.

Maryam Karbalaei, marketing manager of
Zeiss Vision Care Canada, confirms, “This is
photochromics re-envisioned, a product
reinvented.” Blue light protection is built into
the glasses with the Zeiss BlueGuard lens
material. Combined with the light-reactive
photocoat, it blocks up to 50 per cent of
potentially harmful blue light indoors and up
to 94 per cent outdoors when fully tinted. 4

Metaform lens technology is a unique innovation
from Shamir Optical Industry Ltd. It uses an opti-
cal film (preform) technology on the back surface of
the lens, which has the anti-reflection coating built
into it. When applied to the back surface of the lens,
it bonds to create a composite lens material. Regular
anti-reflection coatings do not change the properties
of the lens. However, Metaform technology changes
the lens properties, making them much stronger and
safer to wear. Shamir received an Israeli Environmen-
tal award that recognizes the reduced environmental
impact of this new process.
Metaform technology almost completely eliminates
the annoying Newton’s Rings that are present on all
174 AR-coated lenses. This makes the lenses appear
much clearer, and the patient sees more clearly as
well. Metaform lenses are also about 18 times stronger
than regular lenses, a huge benefit as they protect the
